The records of the University of Alberta are the property of the Board of Governors. While in active use in the creating and receiving unit the records are managed in accordance with the policies of the University and the practices of that department. When they are no longer needed by the creating/receiving unit they are transferred by the unit to the University Archives. There, these permanently valuable records are managed in accordance with the same policies of the University and the practices of the University Archives. The permanently valuable records in the Archives may not be borrowed or removed from the Archives facility. The Archives makes the material available in its reading room.
Non-current records required for short-term administrative purposes may be returned to the transferring unit for a specific period not normally exceeding one month. Records which are frequently requested are returned to units for re- activation as active records.
