The Archives has a lead role in the development of a University-wide records management program. It carries out this role by providing faculties, departments, and administrative units with advice and assistance on:

The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPP) reflects the public commitment of Alberta to more open government, and to the protection of personal information provided to the provincial government and its public bodies.

The University of Alberta became subject to the FOIPP Act on September 1, 1999. FOIPP legislation involves a significant change in the way information is acquired and records are created and used. Emphasis in the FOIPP model is placed on using information only for the purposes for which it has been collected.

The existence of an effective records management system is essential to respond to requests within the time frame set out by the legislation and to properly dispose of outdated records. The Archives has played a major role in the development of the University’s response to FOIPP and in aiding University units in preparing for FOIPP.
