Harris, Walter Edgar

W.E. Harris received his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees 
at the University of Alberta and returned to the University’s 
Chemistry Department in 1946 following his PhD studies at the 
University of Minnesota.  In 1974, he was named Chair of the 
Department of Chemistry, a position he held until his retirement 
in 1980.  He specialized in analytical chemistry, gaining 
particular recognition for his work in chromatographic analysis, 
nuclear technology, and his introductory course in chemical 
analysis.  He played a significant part in the restructuring of 
the General Faculties Council in 1966 and continues to sit on 
University committees.  He received an honorary doctorate from 
the University of Alberta in 1991.
