Johns, Walter Hugh

1908-1985

Dr. Johns joined the University of Alberta in 1938 as a lecturer
in classics. He developed an administrative career alongside
his academic one, serving as assistant to the Dean of Arts
and Science in 1945 and Executive Assistant to the President
in 1947. He was Dean of Arts and Science from 1952 to 1957
and Vice-President of the University from 1957 to 1959. In
1959, Dr. Johns became the sixth President of the University
of Alberta. When his term ended in 1969 he resumed his
academic duties as professor of classics. Upon his
retirement in 1973 he was named Professor Emeritus.
Among Dr. Johns' many awards was the Order of Canada,
which he received in 1978. In 1983 his long-term project, 
A History of the University of Alberta, 1908-1969, was
published by the University of Alberta Press.
