Kaplan, J. Gordin

Gordin Kaplan joined the University in 1981 to act as the first 
Vice-President (Research), a position he held until 1987.  A 
specialist in molecular and cellular biology, he was also 
appointed professor of biochemistry.  He was a social activist 
and lobbyist for scientific research in Canada; during his tenure 
at the University he was instrumental in the creation of the 
Research Policy Committee, the Central Research Fund, and
WISEST (Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science and
Technology).
