Frank Keeping came to the University of Alberta in 1929 as an 
assistant professor of mathematics.  He served as the head of the 
Department of Mathematics from 1954 to 1961.  He retired in 1971 
and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws in 1972.  Trained as a 
physicist, his scholarly interests included astronomy, applied 
mathematics and mathematical statistics; in the latter field he 
was a national authority.  Among his publications were histories 
of the Department of Mathematics and of the Royal Astronomical 
Society of Canada - Edmonton Branch.  He was the first curator of 
the University’s art collection, and with his wife, Dr. Silver
Keeping, was an active supporter of the theatre and musical groups
of Edmonton.
