Shaner, Ralph Faust

Ralph Faust Shaner joined the University in 1921 as an
assistant professor of anatomy. Made a full professor in
1927, he was head of the Department of Anatomy from 1936
until his retirement in 1959. He continued to teach after
his retirement, however, and in 1971 the University awarded
him an honorary degree and the Alumni Golden Jubilee Award.
He taught courses in histology, embryology and neuroanatomy,
and was considered an authority on the embryonic development
of the heart and the mechanisms underlying congenital heart
defects.
