Both undergraduate and graduate programs
emphasize four broad areas of investigation as follows: design
research; knowledge of production processes and materials;
the communication of design ideas and the social implications
of design.
As a profession and creative process, industrial
design incorporates innovation, aesthetics, functional requirements,
technology ergonomics and other human factors criteria into
a product in order to better meet the needs of the user.
At the undergraduate level, investigation
is promoted largely through projects utilizing specific design
principles and skills which encourage exploration and the
development of individual solutions.
