BociurkiwIn 1994, Dr. Bohdan Bociurkiw's generous donation of his extensive library and archives to the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies represented the first step in the eventual creation of the Ukrainian Church Studies Program. Dr. Bociurkiw, former professor of political science at Carleton University in Ottawa and a noted authority on religion in Ukraine, amassed the collection in the course of a lengthy and distinguished academic career. The collection contains many unique items and documents pertaining to the Ukrainian Church, including documents drawn from the closed archives of the Communist Party and the KGB, and will serve as the basis for the program's reference library.

Dr. Krawchuk, then at the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies at Saint Paul University (Ottawa), prepared a detailed catalogue of the collection and, with the assistance of one of his students, packed and arranged to ship the collection to Edmonton.

Church Library

The Bohdan Bociurkiw Memorial Library is open to students and researchers at the CIUS premises in Pembina Hall on the University of Alberta campus, where a reading room houses the books, manuscripts, and copies of archival materials. In addition to Professor Bociurkiw's collection, books and materials donated by other individuals share the space. These include books and and articles on religion in Ukraine, the former USSR, and Eastern Europe presented to the Program on Religion and Culture by Fr. Jim Moss. The personal collection of the Rev. Tymofii Minenko, which contains very rich and important materials on the history of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Canada, Ukraine, and other regions of the world, is housed at the University of Alberta Archives.
