About Us

The Canadian Centre for Clean Coal/Carbon and Mineral processing Technologies (C5MPT) is a unique research and education centre that supports sustainable and responsible energy and mineral development. We are part of the University of Alberta's Faculty of Engineering and are housed within the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering. Our research addresses three aligned themes:

  • Clean Coal
  • Mineral Processing
  • Carbon Capture

The potential economic, environmental and societal benefits of this research are global in span: coal is used globally as a fuel for electrical power generation, industrial process plants and power generation facilities are a major focus of carbon capture and storage, advances in oil sands and mineral processing have the potential for providing significant environmental benefit.

We support sustainable development of Canada’s natural resources—reducing or eliminating environmental impacts such as water use and greenhouse gas emissions—by educating a new generation of clean energy engineers and driving economic growth and the creation of highly skilled, sustainable jobs.

Vision

To become a world-class research centre and innovation hub in clean coal/carbon and mineral processing technologies.

Mission

To ensure that Canada is a world leader in innovative and responsive development and sustainable growth of knowledge-based natural resource economy.

Mandate

To develop efficient, economically viable, and environmentally responsible technologies to secure Canada's fossil fuels and mineral resources for the global economy.

Goals

Research

Develop technologies for responsible resource processing and utilization.

Fundamentals of Science

Provide the fundamentals of science and understanding needed for commercialization of breakthrough technologies that will allow the sustainable development of our natural resources.

Education

Create exceptional education and learning environment ensuring the continuing supply of future scientists and engineers.

Society

Raise public awareness of the technical challenges and opportunities in environmental protection and sustainable development of natural resources in Alberta and Canada.

Management Structures

C5MPT is governed by two committees providing strategic and scientific guidance. The Committee is comprised of industrial and academic members with an active and in-depth knowledge of the research theme areas and include representatives from each of our founding industrial partners:

    • Capital Power Corporation
    • Teck
    • Hatch
    • Nexen
    • Foundation CMG
    • Xstrata
    • Alberta Innovates – Energy and Environment Solutions
    • The Dean of Engineering for the University of Alberta.

The Management Advisory Board provides strategic direction; monitors progress; approves budgets, research plans and intellectual property proposals; and undertakes other centre governance tasks. The Scientific Director leads C5MPT under the guidance of this Advisory Board. The Director is supported by “Theme Leaders” for each area of research focus, and by the Centre Manager.

The Scientific Advisory Committee sets priority areas of research and calls for research proposals from the University of Alberta and other universities. It reviews and screens proposals and works with researchers to align proposals with existing work and strategic direction and areas. The committee reviews projects through all phases until completion.
