Accessing Local WestGrid Resources via SSH Windows Client

(Specifically the WestGrid Complex of SGI Machines From a Windows Client)

These help pages explain how to use SSH communication software to access the research computing facilities at AICT, with emphasis on the WestGrid Complex of SGI/IBM machines.

If you have questions or suggestions regarding the information on these pages, please contact research.support@ualberta.ca

This page provides general information about downloading the software, establishing a connection, and transferring files. For more detailed walkthroughs, follow the links in the body of the text or the links on the right.

1. What is SSH?

SSH (Secure Shell) is a communications program that provides you with a secure connection to a remote computer.

It replaces the older Telnet program, which has a serious security problem. When you use Telnet, your ID and password are transmitted as plain text. Unscrupulous users can easily capture these crucial pieces of data, putting your work (and the Unix system you're connecting to) at risk.

SSH, on the other hand, encrypts and decrypts all traffic between your Windows computer and the remote machine. Even if your data is intercepted, it will be useless to anyone else.

To access the Unix systems at AICT (including the WestGrid facilities) from your Windows machine, you'll need to download and install SSH.

2. Downloading SSH

You can download the free (non-commercial) version of SSH for Windows here.

3. Installing SSH

Once you've downloaded a copy of SSH, navigate to the file and double-click it to begin the install process. Allow SSH to choose the default settings for the install. If you're unfamiliar with the process of installing new software, you can find a beginner's guide to installing SSH.

When the installation is complete, you'll find that two programs have actually been installed on your computer. These are Secure Shell Client (the remote access software) and Secure File Transfer (an FTP-like program).

4. Configuring Secure Shell Client

Before you can establish a remote Unix session using Secure Shell Client, you need to tell the program a few things about your intended host machine. For a step-by-step guide to this process, click here.

5. Establishing a connection

If you've created a Profile with the correct configuration information, you're ready to connect to one of the servers at AICT. A step-by-step guide is available here.

6. Using Secure File Transfer

To upload and download files, you'll need to use Secure File Transfer, an FTP-like program included with SSH. This program can be opened from within Secure Shell Client. For a step-by-step guide to its use, go here.
