Enhancing Hopeful Interactions with Children and Youth

Program Description

Much of the work in this program area revolves around creating resources and opportunities for adults to enhance and sustain their interactions with children and youth in a variety of different settings. This includes writing curriculum and other resources, consultation, providing workshops, in-services, mentoring and conducting and supporting ongoing research initiatives.

Another important component of this program area includes providing opportunities for interested adults to share wonders and insights about the role of hope in the lives of children and youth both on-line and in face to face interactions.

Mission

To engage students in uncovering, discovering and accessing hope to act in the present while envisioning a future in which they can participate.

Vision

To create opportunities for children and youth to make hope visible and accessible.

Since beginning to explore hope in my class and using hope focused strategies I have noticed a number of changes in my students. The students show a greater ability to independently problem solve. They are better equipped to deal with 'road blocks' to reaching their goals. In a class where many students are in the care of Children Services, they have begun to speak more about the future. Academically, the students feel safe in class and calmer about their lives and this has impacted their ability to learn. Socially, the students are more considerate toward each other and show greater co-operation.
