Community Service

Program Description

Children and youth involved in this program along with an adult coordinator, volunteer to bring hope to those with whom they interact in the community. These may include seniors, residents in care centers, inner city residents at food shelters or children in hospital settings. They do specific hope-focused activities with those with whom they interact and then reflect on their immediate experience and its effect on their lives.

This program offers the opportunity for an increase in youth leadership and citizenship skills through meaningful hope-focused participation.

Research at the Hope Foundation, alongside international research, demonstrates hope is a multi-dimensional concept that enables individuals to envision and actively move toward a more positive future. Hope is the motivating factor behind resilience. Higher hope scores correlate positively with preserved sense of self-worth, academic success, social competence and creativity. Students who have a high degree of hope tend to have strong problem-solving abilities and engage in wellness-enhancing activities. On the other hand, hopelessness can lead our young people to turn to drugs, suicide, crime, violence and dropping out of school.

Mission

To create hopeful communities and individual identities as a result of children and youth volunteering their time to bring hope to others.

Vision

Provide opportunities for children and youth to participate in a variety of hope-focused community service activities.
