Accredited Studies

Working in partnership with post-secondary institutions, we encourage graduate and undergraduate students in a variety of disciplines to become interested in learning about hope.

Students registered in accredited programs of study in counselling sometimes make on-site or off-site supervision arrangements with the Hope Foundation. Supervision is generally provided by Wendy Edey.

In the case of on-site placements, students come to the Hope Foundation and work with clients. They use basic counselling skills, and add an additional level of learning to use Hope Strategies. Since the Hope Foundation's counselling program is relatively small and does not maintain a waiting list of clients, students must have the capacity and willingness to make community connections to increase our client numbers during their placements. Students from: Campus Alberta Graduate Program in Counselling, Gonzaga University, Pacifica University and the University of Calgary have successfully completed on-site placements.

Off-site placements are supervised by Wendy Edey. They enable students to study hope at a setting other than the Hope Foundation. Students are responsible for making these arrangements. In 2005 a nursing student from University of Calgary completed a hope study placement at the Alzheimer Society of Edmonton. This arrangement was a four-way partnership between the student, the Hope Foundation, the Alzheimer Society of Edmonton and the University of Calgary.

An interdisciplinary course through the University of Alberta Department of Educational Psychology is available for graduate and undergraduate credit.

Hope and the Helping Relationship
Educational Psychology 497-597, University of Alberta

Offered as an evening course in the winter term, this practical interdisciplinary course appeals to students in a variety of disciplines including counselling, education, nursing, disability studies, human ecology and general arts and sciences. It offers a framework of research and theory and encourages students to explore the topic of hope in the context of their own work.

Graduate students from western Canada universities may access the summer session through the Western Dean's Agreement. Students registering in either summer or winter sessions must obtain departmental permission from Loretta Moore in the Department of Educational Psychology Loretta.Moore@ualberta.ca

Hope Studies Certificate Program, NorQuest College

The Hope Studies Certificate is constructed around the philosophy that a greater understanding of hope's influence in our own lives and the lives of others is a beneficial part of the healing process. The program explores the value and impact of hope in the lives of people and their caregivers and surveys hope research findings. This program would appeal to those in caring occupations and roles.
