2006 ANNUAL STUDENT ESSAY CONTEST

Topic:  In the past twelve months we have seen a number of high-profile labour disputes in Alberta, such as those at Lakeside Packers and Telus. We have also seen the Provincial Government lower the working age to 12, and increase the minimum wage to $7 per hour. Now the government is conducting a review of Alberta’s Labour Standards Code. In light of these developments, please answer the following question:

How should workers’ rights be protected in Alberta? Answers should include reference to the roles, if any, of the provincial government and of labour unions in the process.

Winners:

High School Category: Ms. Lisa Curle, William Aberhart High School (Calgary) (view essay)
Undergraduate Category:
Mr. Andy Davies, University of Lethbridge (view essay)
Graduate Category: No winner.
