Computing
and Network Services invites everyone to the
upcoming Campus Computing Symposium 1997. This
week-long event runs from June 23-27 1997 in the
Tory
Lecture Theater complex at the
north
end of the
University of
Alberta. The Symposium's theme -- The Digital
Planet -- reflects the far-reaching changes that
have occurred in the computing industry,
post-secondary education, popular culture and
electronic communications since the last Symposium
was held in June 1995.
Looking back just two years, we can see how
technological dreams have become digital realities.
In 1995, Internet technology was immature,
non-interactive, with few useful applications in
post-secondary education and business settings. By
contrast, today there are a large number of
highly-engineered educational and business products
for the Internet, knowledge networks and
institutional intranets. Website creation is no
longer limited to those with fluency in difficult
programming and markup languages but is a
mainstream activity in the cybercity.
As in past Symposium events, CNS has gathered
together a broad alliance of conference sponsors
and organizers from both the university and
business worlds. Specifically, this year's
Campus
Sessions (June 25-27) is being held in
conjunction with the
Western
Canada Oracle Users Conference and
Focus
on Industry Conference (June 23-24).
Also on Monday and Tuesday, June 23-24, a
special Focus on Industry conference is being
devoted to computing developments in commerce and
industry. Conference organizers include
CNS and
corporate players such as
Telus,
Software
Alberta, the Edmonton Computer Book Source,
Apple
Computer Ltd., the
New Media
Initiative, and
Industry Canada.
