The Department of Surgery is a world leader in research. Its work spans the entire range of investigation from molecular and cell biology to translational and educational research to multi-centre randomized clinical trials. Researchers access funding and world-class, multidisciplinary, research facilities in Edmonton.
Edmonton’s international reputation is growing as a healthcare innovation hub: an economic centre of cutting-edge healthcare products and services. Furthermore, large, diverse clinical facilities, equipped with state-of-the-art technology and the latest electronic medical records system are a data mine for clinical research. The department’s researchers give lectures across the globe and collaborate with international institutes.
The Division of Surgical Research supports and promotes discovery and clinical research within the department. It focuses on developing the research abilities of trainees and fostering the synergistic potential of collaboration between basic scientists and clinician scientists. The Research Committee of the Department of Surgery provides a forum for representatives of department divisions to organize, support, and develop policies related to departmental research activities. The department continues to lead in many areas of surgical research, as its members published important new findings and received significant competitive research funding.

The Director of the Division of Surgical Research, Dr. Christine Webber, chairs the research committee overseeing research programs in the division. The research committee is made up of members from each division within the department as well as a surgical resident and a basic science student to represent graduate students.
