Academic Career

Text Box: I am a Full Professor in the department of Modern Languages & Cultural Studies and the Director of the Certificate for Translation Studies. I received my doctorate from Cornell University in 1996 in French Literature (specialization: Caribbean Francophone Literature), my Masters in French from McMaster University in 1991 (specialization: translation) and my BA in French from McMaster University in 1990 (with an option in linguistics).
My areas of specialization include Francophone Literatures and Cultures, Translation and Translation Theory, Translation History, Louisiana Creole Literature and Culture, and Caribbean Literature and Culture. My research deals with cultural translation in the Circum–Caribbean region and my current focus is on Louisiana from the perspective of New World Studies.
Since my appointment at the University of Alberta in 1996 I have taught courses in French (Fren 251 Intermediate University French; Fren 301 Introduction to French Literary Studies; Fren 316: Belonging (MIigration and Identity); Fren 352 Reading and Writing in French; Fren 432 Topics in Francophone Cultural Practices; Fren 465 The Caribbean; Fren 466 The Maghreb; Fren 529 Francophone Literature Outside of France; Fren 565 The Caribbean), Translation (Fren 353 Translation: French into English; Fren 354 Translation: French into English;  Fren 454 Translation: English into French; Fren 515 Translation: French into English;  Fren 516 in Translation: English into French; Fren 517 Translation French-English-French; Fren 554 Translation English into French) and Translation Theory (MLCS 300 Introduction to Translation; MLCS 400 Translation History; Fren 600 Translation Theories; MLCS 600 Translation Theories) as well as Directed Reading courses both at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
I currently hold a SSHRC Standard Research Grant for “Louisiana: A History of Translation” and I have received numerous internal Research and Travel Grants for which I thank the University of Alberta and, over the years, the following honours have been bestowed upon me: Olin Fellowship (Cornell University, 1992-1996), Sage Graduate Fellowship (Cornell, 1991), Ontario Graduate Scholarship (McMaster University, 1990), McMaster University Graduate Scholarship (McMaster, 1990), Arthur W. Patrick Graduate Scholarship (McMaster, 1989), Governor General's Medal (McMaster, 1989).
