AWA BENTE ROED GRADUATE STUDENT AWARD

This award, valued at $500, will be made on the basis of scholarly achievement to a student enrolled at the University of Alberta in a graduate diploma, masters, or doctoral program (full- or part-time). Preference will be given to those whose research, scholarship, and/or community involvement contribute to the advancement of women. Examples include advancing the role of women in academia or increasing information about and improving understanding of women's status, women's achievements, or the problems which women face.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate diploma, master's or doctoral program at the University of Alberta, full- or part-time. Preference will be given to those whose research, scholarship, and/or community activities contribute to the advancement of women.

Materials to include with application form:
Submit three (3) copies of each of the following along with the application:

  • Statement of research and/or scholarship project(s) - maximum 1 page
  • Statement of why you should receive this award - give maximum of 1 page (i.e. how your research, scholarship, and/or community involvement contribute to the advancement of women (such as advancing the role of women in academia or increasing information about and improving understanding of women's status, women's acheivements, or the problems which women face)
  • Up-to-date curriculum vitae - maximum of 4 pages
  • Up-to-date transcript of all University of Alberta marks (unofficial, stamped transcripts are acceptable)
  • Applicants must arrange for two letters of reference to be included with the application. Letters submitted for the University of Alberta Graduate Scholarship competition are acceptable
  • Attach the application checklist

Other information:

The award winner must submit a one-page report by 15 August to the President of the AWA describing the work done while holding the Award. The report may be published in the AWA newsletter.

Terms of Reference

awa is looking for scholarly achievement: that is, for students whose work is recognized as excellent, firstly by instructors who have awarded them grades, secondly by their referees, and thirdly by the committee in the light of comparison among applicants.

awa is looking for work that contributes to the advancement of women, such as advancing the role of women in academia or increasing information about and improving understanding of women's status, women's achievements, or the problems which women face.

Winners of this award will be students who have already shown outstanding powers of mind; sophisticated grasp of the fields of knowledge in which they are engaged; originality and independence of their own contributions to those fields; and have demonstrated potential value of those contributions, either intellectual or practical or both, to others concerned with improved understanding of women's issues and with action to benefit women.
