Tonge's Island, Westmorland County, New Brunswick 1985: Initial Survey and Background Paper, by Marc C. Lavoie. Unpublished manuscript produced by Archaeology Services, Provincial Parks and Historical Sites, Tourism Recreation and Heritage, P.O. Box 6000, Fredericton, N.B. E3B 5H1. ISBN 0-88838-366-5. I have found no link between Richard Tongue of Heaton Norris and Manchester and this Tonge line to date. Provides an Introduction, Historical Sketch and Archaeology information related to Tonge's Island located in the Amherst/Aulac area of New Brunswick. The Island was granted to Winkworth Tonge, A British Army engineer, on May 28 1760. Winkworth Tonge is perhaps the most notorious Tonge's of early British North America having served in high military positions and as an early elected official in Nova Scotia. He eventually settled in Nova Scotia and his descendants were very prominent in Hants County, Nova Scotia and Jamaica. A genealogy prepared by Maureen Tonge (see below) indicates he was born in County Wexford, Ireland circa 1727.

Tong, Tongue and Allied Families, 1974, Edited by Rear Admiral Herald F. Stout, USN (retired), 5183, Roxbury Road, San Diego, CA 92116, Published by Finney-Stout-Tong Family Association, Hard cover limited private printing, 201 pages. I have found no link between Richard Tongue of Heaton Norris and Manchester and these Tonge line to date. This is perhaps the best publication I have come across in terms of content and organization dealing with the surname Tong/Tonge/Tongue. For the most part the book is focused upon the genealogy of American Tong/Tonge/Tongues descending from descendants of John Tongue of Maryland and particularly William Tong, Revolutionary Soldier of Prince George's County (circa 1700). Some notes appear on the earliest recorded Tong/Tongue lines in America (circa 1649). The author has also added a chapter called Tong Sketch File which lists partial genealogies for 'unconnected segments of the surname'. Remarks are also included in the preface related to The Maryland Tong-Tongues, the Tong Coat-of-Arms, The Tong(ue) Family, and the Autobiography of William Tong, (1844). While it is believed William Tong emigrated from Devonshire, UK, this has not been verified.

Other descendant lines show connections to Birmingham (Samuel Tongue); Ekylsall / Eccles Hall and possibly Manchester and Chester ( William Tonge); Staneclyffe, Disley, Chester , Middleton (Samuel Tonge - Owned and lived at Tonge Hall just north of Manchester); Greater Bolton ( Robert Tong); Kent, Sutton (John Tong); Croyden (Walter Tong); Manchester ( William Edward Tonge); London, Dulwich, Croyden, Sussex (John Frederick Tongue).

Various indexes and numerous photos.

Middleton Matters, Middleton Civic Association, 1990. ISBN 0 9516788 0 9. Printed by British Vita plc., Oldham Road, Middleton and Middleton Civic Association, January 1991, 84 pages. I have found no link between Richard Tongue of Heaton Norris and Manchester and this Tonge line to date. Contains the articles: Tonge Hall: The House and its Families and, Tonge Hall: An Architectural Re-appraisal. Middleton is situated about 7 kilometers north of the centre of Manchester. Together the articles provide a good history and genealogy of the Middleton Tonge's descending from Henry de Tonge (1388).
