Patrick William Joseph Luc Morin 1 September 1954 - 16 February 1989 |
| Patrick was born near Montreal but grew up in Edmonton. While earning a BA in geography, he chose an art minor in sculpture. His instructor, Catherine Burgess, was so impressed with his visual sense that she encouraged him to enter the fine arts degree program and he did. He studied under Peter Hide and worked in abstract forms using wood (often laminar pieces from the scrap of a structural truss beam company west of Edmonton). Some pieces were stained if the grain added to the flow of the work, but others were painted to keep the focus on the shapes and not the grain. Sometimes he used steel plates to reinforced the structure, if the piece was large enough to need that support. He graduated with an MVA in 1984 and worked in a loft studio in the Great West Saddlery Building in downtown Edmonton until his struggle of living with AIDS forced him to abandon wood for paper. He died a few years later in 1989 . His limited output is now confined to a few public and private collections. | |
