Dr. Antoine (Tony) Noujaim (1937-2006)

It is with much sadness that the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences acknowledges the death of one of its Editorial Board members, Dr. Antoine Noujaim. Tony, the scientist, entrepreneur and philanthropist, passed away July 2nd 2006. He had a full and rich life. He was an avid supporter of the Canadian Society for Pharmaceutical Sciences. He received many prestigious awards from both scientific and business communities. Recently, the University of Alberta celebrated his outstanding achievement by bestowing him with an honorary Doctor of Science degree.

Tony was born in Egypt where he did his undergraduate training. Subsequently, he received his doctorate degree in bionucleonics from Purdue University. He joined the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Alberta in Edmonton in 1966, where he established a thriving bionucleonics division. Tony took early retirement from his very productive and fulfilling academic life in 1992 to spend more time on his passion of discovering new drugs. He founded or co-founded several companies including Biomira, AltaRex, Virexx and Equitech. He has developed many new drugs that are at various stages of development. His anticancer drug, Ovarex is in Phase III clinical trial.

Tony was a generous man. His renowned philanthropy included support for research and development at the University of Alberta. More importantly, Tony was very generous with his time to mentor students and colleagues.

Tony’s research excellence, generosity, leadership, pleasant manner and true collegiality will be greatly missed by the pharmaceutical sciences community.
