I'm not a performing artist, but this is my own interpretation of Prospero's epilogue - listen ª epil.wav

Now my charms are all o'erthrown,
And what strength I have's mine own,
Which is most faint: now, 'tis true,
I must be here confined by you,
Or sent to Naples. Let me not,
Since I have my dukedom got
And pardon'd the deceiver, dwell
In this bare island by your spell;
But release me from my bands
With the help of your good hands:
Gentle breath of yours my sails
Must fill, or else my project fails,
Which was to please. Now I want
Spirits to enforce, art to enchant,
And my ending is despair,
Unless I be relieved by prayer,
Which pierces so that it assaults
Mercy itself and frees all faults.
As you from crimes would pardon'd be,
Let your indulgence set me free.

A lot has been said about Prospero's famous epilogue (above). Many critics suggest it reflects Shakespeare's own farewell to theatre and art. Depending on tone of voice, pauses, facial expressions etc., the epilogue can be interpreted in many different ways. Form a group and have each group member perform Prospero's soliloquy using different expressions and mannerisms.

The Tempest has some very clear stage directions; however, there is a lot of room for interpretation. Together with a group of students act out the beginning storm scene from the play. What kind of sounds would you incorporate into your production? How would you make these sounds? What does the stage look like?
