What: 12-hour stationary bike-a-thon fundraiser in support of community-based HIV care in Africa

When: February 28, 2009, 9 AM - 9 PM

Where: SUB Stage, University of Alberta

Who: Anybody interested in becoming a part of the AIDS solution

On February 28, 2009, the University of Alberta Dignitas Youth Chapter will join several other chapters throughout the country in hosting the "Race for Dignity" - a 12-hour stationary bike-a-thon fundraiser in support of community-based HIV care in Africa. Teams of participants will spin on stationary bikes for 12 hours in the University of Alberta's Students Union Building (SUB) to support Dignitas International's innovative community-based care model.

Each month Dignitas tests thousands of people for HIV and starts hundreds on life-saving HIV medications in Africa. The cost of the medications and care required to extend the life of one HIV positive person by one month is only $24, which is the suggested minimum fundraising amount for everybody taking part in the Race for Dignity. The more you raise, the more people you will be able to save - and those who raise the most will win prizes! If you can't get a big enough team together to spin for the entire 12 hours, no problem - we'll just match you up with other individuals or partial teams to make sure someone is always riding, from 9 AM to 9 PM!

Can't make it out to ride this Saturday but still want to participate? Consider making a donation towards the cause by donating online with this secure form!

What to expect?

  • Raise pledges through your personal fundraising page.
  • Spin for as little as 1 hour or as many as 12 - the choice is yours!
  • Enjoy 12 hours of non-stop onstage entertainment.
  • Be fueled by water/sports drink/nutritious food.
  • Receive a Race for Dignity t-shirt; win prizes and awards.
  • Socialize with family, friends and other participants.
  • Know that your efforts will save lives!
