  Science & Religion: An Introduction

This introductory course examines the nature of both science and religion in order to explore the various relationships between them. The primary goal is to dispel the popular myth that they are in conflict. As a result, this course argues that if the limits of both science and religion are respected, then their relationship is not only complementary, but also necessary.

             Topics Examined:
  • Models on Science & Religion: What best describes the relationship? Compartmental? Overlapping? Integrative?
  • Intelligent Design: Does nature’s beauty, complexity, and functionality reflect the mind of God?
  • The Galileo Affair: Was it about science vs. religion? Or something else?
  • Noah’s Flood: Was it a real event? If so, was it global? Or local?
  • Darwin’s Religious Beliefs: Was he an atheist? Or a Christian?
  • Genesis 1 Creation Account Is it literal? Or figurative? How long are the days of creation?
  • The Origins Debate: Can a Christian believe in evolution?
  • Human Origins: Were Adam & Eve real historical people? Or mythical?
  • Natural Evil: Would a loving God create through an evolutionary process?
             Teaching Style:
  Constructivist Learning
The purpose of the course is for students to examine various approaches to the relationship between science and religion and for them to construct THEIR personal positions.
  Flip Classroom Format
