CURRENT PROJECT

gateways to the news:

front pages and homepages of International DaiLies

In today’s increasingly globalized and mediated society, the study of media’s relationship with politics is more relevant than ever for democratic societies. The political importance of this role is underlined by Dahlgren (2009: 48) :

the fundamental role of journalism in democracy is to link citizenship to political life. If citizens are at least linked to the media – if they are thus ‘connected’ – this is an important precondition for engagement. [… I]f they see little possibility to actually participate, if they have little chance to see themselves as engaged citizens, then the problems run deep.

The proposed project is an empirical interdisciplinary study that intends to examine that relationship in the current context of “mediamorphosis” (Fidler, 1997) , i.e.  the shift from print to online news, by investigating the strategies employed by two international quality dailies, Le Monde and The New York Times, when they present news “at a glance.” It will investigate the multimodal genre of news media front pages and home pages, qualitatively and quantitatively, and will do so within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics and by using the concept of framing as defined in communication studies. By studying front pages and home pages as a genre, this project will contribute to a better understanding of the evolution of news journalism in a globalized world.
