FAMILY VIOLENCE IS A HUMAN ISSUE

 

Professor Murray Straus of the University of New Hampshire, arguably the world's premier sociological researcher on family violence, will present "Combating the myths of partner abuse". Prof. Straus is the author and co-author of over 200 articles on the family and research methods, and fifteen books including:

Beating the Devil Out of Them: Corporal Punishment in American Families, 2000

Understanding Partner Violence, National Council on Family Relations, 1995

Physical Violence in American Families: Risk Factors and Adaptations toViolence in 8,145 Families, 1990.

Ms. Mary Cleary, Coordinator for "Amen", a help line and shelter for abused husbands in Ireland, will share her experience of helping over 10,000 men and their families. The title of Ms. Cleary’s presentation will be "Helping Abused Men: The Irish Experience".

The Honourable Senator Anne Cools will be moderator for the lectures in Edmonton.

Mr. Mel Feit, executive director of the National Center For Men and a powerful public advocate for equal rights for men, has appeared on hundreds of television and radio talk shows including CNN’s Crossfire, Oprah Winfrey, and Phil Donahue. Mr. Feit will present "Creative ways to communicate about and redefine family violence." Mr. Feit will be speaking only in Calgary.

 

In Edmonton the event will be on Saturday, November 4, 2000 at Edmonton City Hall, 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm. This event is open to the public and free of charge.

Very inexpensive parking is available under City Hall (parking entrance on 99th St. just south of 104th Ave.)
