  • History of the CATG

The Canadian Association of Teachers of German is an association of German teachers at all levels of instruction. It was founded in the spring of 1997 and officially constituted on June 15, 1997.

At the Kontakt '95 conference in Regina the decision was made to form a new association to replace the two large German associations existing at that time, the Western Council on the Teaching of German (WCTG) and the Canadian Council on the Teaching of German (CCTG/SKKD). A joint restructuring committee was appointed to draft a constitution for the new association. When its task was completed, all Canadian associations of German teachers ratified the proposed constitution. These association were then invited to join the new national body as founding members. The constitution was ratified by the membership at the first general meeting of the CATG on June 15, 1997; it was revised in February 2003.

The Canadian Association of Teachers of German is open to professional organizations of German teachers and to individuals who may or may not be members of existing local, provincial, regional or national associations of German teachers. The objectives of the Association are to facilitate the professional work of local, provincial, regional and national groups of teachers of German at all levels by coordinating and assisting their efforts in promoting the teaching of German in Canada, providing, and helping to provide, professional in-service activities for their members, and representing the interests of all levels of teaching of German to Canadian, German and other authorities and institutions.

The CATG has the mandate to assist its members to share expertise on a local or regional basis, to organize and help to organize workshops, seminars, and conferences for teachers and professional development personnel, to collect and disseminate information relevant to the promotion of the teaching of German in Canada, to collect, publish, and disseminate suitable teaching materials, and to obtain and assist its members in obtaining funding for professional devevelopment purposes.
