This is the course page for Physics 595/495, "High Energy Astrophysics", taught by Craig Heinke in fall 2015.

We will generally meet T/Th 12:30pm-1:50 pm in CAB 273. I will be away Sept. 12-19. To replace these, we will have makeup sessions on dates to be chosen with input from the class. The final makeup period will be project presentations, sometime shortly after the last day of class, if at least one student chooses this.

Our textbook is "Astrophysics Processes", by Hale Bradt, available in the bookstore, or online (e.g. www.bookfinder.com).

The following extra chapter covers much of the first topic: here (13 pages).

You may wish to review Andrew Cumming's notes for teaching a similar course, which I have followed for some derivations.

Other books that may be helpful to you (I use them in preparing some lectures) are:
"High Energy Astrophysics", by Malcolm Longair, 3rd (2011) or 2nd (1992, 1997) edition
"Radiative Processes" by Rybicki and Lightman (1977), standard text--excellent derivations from first principles, but few applications.
"Introduction to Modern Astrophysics", by Carroll & Ostlie (text for 3rd-year courses), has a nice description of radiative transfer in sections 9.1-9.4.
"Introduction to High-Energy Astrophysics", by Rosswog and Bruggen, 2007 (slightly lower level, has applications)
"Accretion Power in Astrophysics" by Frank, King and Raine, 2nd ed. 1992--classic text on accretion, which we'll study as a key application.
