Identity Theft

Victim Perspectives and Psychological Impact

Research Study

A research study is being conducted at the University of Alberta to explore how identity theft is experienced by its victims, how victims cope, and what helps or hinders recovery.

This study is expected to contribute to our understanding of identity theft and provide a foundation for mental health services aimed at helping victims of this crime. It is also hoped that the study will help inform policy makers, community workers, and others concerned with victim assistance.

We are currently seeking volunteers from the greater Edmonton area who:

are 18 years of age or older

have recently discovered the identity theft

are willing to be interviewed about their experience and to complete questionnaires aimed at understanding the impact of identity theft on its victims

To participate, please contact Dr. Jessica Van Vliet at (780) 492-5894 or e-mail IDTheftStudy@ualberta.ca

The plan for this study has been reviewed for its adherence to ethical guidelines and approved by the Faculties of Education, Extension, and Augustana Research Ethics Boards (EEA REB) at the University of Alberta.
