STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY

Effective learning is the result of a mutual process. It involves the commitment of both teacher and student. The commitment of a teacher manifests itself in his or her expertise, preparation, and classroom use. The commitment of students manifests itself in preparation, attendance, and participation. The more involved the commitment, the more productive -- and enjoyable -- the learning will be.

A recommended guideline for study and class time is a 2:1 ratio. That is, on average, a reasonable amount of time to spend on a course (reading, reviewing, doing assignments) is twice as much for every hour of class time.

In the event that other commitments -- or pressures -- impact on class time, dates for assignments, or scheduled exams, it is a good idea to discuss this with your instructor. Otherwise, undesirable -- yet avoidable -- consequences may result.
