Discourse Analysis (Winter 2005)
Graduate seminar. An advanced introduction to the theories and
methodologies used in discourse analysis. Course material is taken from
current and seminal research in both written and oral discourse analysis.

Sociolinguistics (Winter 1998, Fall 2000, Winter 2003, Winter
2006) Graduate seminar. An advanced introduction to the concepts and
methods used in sociolinguistic research. Course material is taken from
current research in German, French, Spanish, and English sociolinguistics.

Language Planning (Winter 2002, Winter 2007) Graduate
seminar. An advanced introduction to language planning and policy
throughout the world, with a primary focus on the languages studied in our
department. Course material is taken from current and seminal research in
the field. Taught in English.
Multilingualism in the German-Speaking World (Fall 1999,
Winter 2002) Graduate seminar. Begins with a look at some of the
theoretical principles behind the study of multilingualism, and then
proceeds to an analysis of case studies of multilingual situations
throughout the world in which one of the languages is German. Taught in
German and English.
Language and Power in the German-Speaking World (Fall
1998) Graduate seminar. Introduces students to the study of how
language affects and is affected by politics and power relationships, both
on the level of the individual and on the level of society. Course
material is taken from current research on German. Taught in English and
German.
German Dialects (Winter 2000, Winter 2002, Winter 2005, Winter
2009, Fall 2011) Fourth-year German linguistics course. A close look
at some widely differing German dialects and the broad features of the
dialect map of German, first from the perspective of traditional
dialectology, and then from the perspective of sociolinguistic
dialectology. Taught in German.
The Acquisition of German as a Second Language (Fall 1998,
Fall 2002, Fall 2006, Fall 2008) Fourth-year German linguistics
course. This course deals with the principles and processes in language
learning both in and out of the classroom, and with the different
hypotheses and theories concerning language learning, in particular
German. Taught in German.
German Sociolinguistics (Winter 1999, Winter 2001, Fall 2004,
Winter 2007, Winter 2009, Winter 2011) Fourth-year German linguistics
course. This course introduces students to sociolinguistic research with
a special focus on German. Taught in German.
German-English Contrastive Phonetics and Phonology (Fall 1999,
