About Me: Jennifer Passey

Position: Faculty Lecturer: Arts (July 2009 – Present)
Area: Social and Cultural Psychology

As a faculty lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the Universtiy of Alberta, I teach courses related to the Social and Cultural Psychology area, and supervise undergraduate research projects.

***Note re: Honor’s students, Volunteers, Individual Study/Research courses (PSYCO 496/498), and Research Opportunity Program in Psychology (PSYCO 299)

I encourage any students who are interested in obtaining research experience and scientific writing skills to take advantage of the individual research/study opportunities available within the Psychology Department.  Students who are interested in completing this work with me are encouraged to email me about their interests, including a resume, transcript, and the reason they are interested in pursuing these opportunities. As a Faculty Lecturer, I have a heavy teaching load and do not have a laboratory. Therefore, I am only able to supervise a small number of students at a time, and the type of research I can conduct may be limited. However, I am going to be conducting research with Honor’s students and will need assistance.  I am also willing to take on 496/498 students who will complete a directed reading version of the course, that will focus more on developing a thorough knowledge of Self Regulation and Social Rejection literature, research skills important for developing and critiquing research ideas, and scientific writing skills.

Any student working with me will be responsible for attending a group meeting each week. PSYCO 496/498 students will also be responsible for some combination of the following tasks: assisting with the preparation for a new research project (e.g., ethics proposal, literature review, developing materials); data collection, entry, and analysis; completing readings on Self Regulation and Social Rejection for discussion in meetings; completing writing assignments aimed at developing scientific writing skills. The PSYCO 299 students and volunteers will be involved in completing some of the research tasks listed above, but for a shorter number of hours per week. Please check the Psychology Department website to make sure you have any necessary prerequisites before contacting me. Because of the nature of my research interests, I prefer that students have taken PSYCO 105; for PSYCO 496/498 students should have taken either PSYCO 241 or 233.
