Who We Are

The Edmonton On Campus Adult Education Society is a not for profit society which began in 1987. On Campus serves individuals 20 years of age or older who have been labeled developmentally disabled. We provide the opportunity to participate in an inclusive postsecondary educational program at the University of Alberta. The On Campus Program is an independently funded and administered program affiliated with the Developmental Disabilities Centre.

Why University?

Students with the On Campus program attend university for reasons similar to other university students.

* The opportunity for a wide variety of personal contacts and friendships.

* The development of self-identity through interactions with other university students and the opportunity for a variety of interesting experiences.

* Increased employment potential through the development of job skills, contacts, and references.

* Increased independence and self-esteem.

The Life of a University Student

Classes

Classes and faculties commonly accessed include: Humanities, Drama, Music, English, Education, Physical Education, and Arts. Students also attend university Fitness and Recreation classes. On Campus staff assist the student with class selection and gain professor and student support.

Work

On Campus students attend university for approximately four years. During the annual semester break from May to August, they gain valuable work experience in areas which interest them. On Campus staff assist the students with job placement and work with the employer as needed with training and ongoing support.

Volunteers

University students play a key role in involving the On Campus student. This includes supporting a student in such things as:

* Academic classes

* Recreation/Fitness activities

* Social events, i.e., dances, sports, games

* Clubs, fraternities, associations

* Peer tutoring.

All of these opportunities have the added benefit of increasing both the On Campus student's social network as well as that of the university volunteer. With this comes the potential for new friendships and the development of a richer, more full life.
