About Me
I am a Vietnamese-Canadian male living in Edmonton, Alberta. I'm tall, dark and handsome. I have a deep passion for electronics. In my room, I can often be found breaking them apart. I love working with my hands, fixing things around the house, and doing it myself instead of trading my hard-earned money for a convenient commercial solution.
I'm a big fan of DIY and homebrew.
Some of the DIY projects I've more-or-less completed, excluding the diyMod and the Carrie UHS, include (you're going to have to take my word for it until I can provide proof):
- custom cables for my church band. This includes 5 male 1/4" TS - male 1/4" TS instrument cables, 2 male XLR - female XLR mic cables, 3 male 1/4" TS - male 1/4" TS speaker cables and 3 male NEMA 5-15 - female NEMA 5-15 extension cords. All parts obtained from Markertek.
- setting up my home theater system. I bought 3 HDMI cables from Bargain Cell, who can be found on Amazon.com, for a total cost of $30 including shipping to Canada. That consisted of two male-male HDMI cables of 6 ft and 25 ft denominations and one HDMI-DVI cable of 25 feet. I saw an 8 ft Rocketfish cable at Best Buy for 69.99 CAD.
- several headphone audio amplifiers and DACs. I've lost track of just how many of each I've built, but I've built the CMoy, A47, PIMETA v1.1, PIMETA v2.0, Millett Hybrid MAX, Millett Starving Student, Mini3, AlienDAC. Not necessarily the heaviest hitting DIY amps and DACs available, but I hope to build bigger and better amps as my budget allows. "Starving Student" is right.
- modding my Grado Labs SR60 headphones. You can see them in this here thread: click. Mods include recabling to Canare Star Quad, switching to Grado Labs Jumbo Pads (with glue mod), adding Dynamat sticky tack to the driver housing, changing the headband and adding thumb screws. Not all the mods affect the sound, but it does enhance my overall experience with them. They've been compared to fairly high end headphones by fellow head-fiers, and some have actually preferred them to $900+ headphones. Consider that I bought them for 69 USD from HeadRoom.
- more to be added later.
