Department of Elementary Education offers several options for teachers to
further their education in second language teaching. These programs will meet
the needs of teachers in Second
language pedagogy courses are offered in Summer, Fall and Winter sessions.
All courses taught during the school year are scheduled in evenings in order
to accommodate teachers. Open Studies Program You can register as an Open Studies student and
start taking courses in your area of interest. The Open Studies program allows
you to take selected university-level credit courses without following a
specific degree or diploma program. Please apply for admission as an Open
Studies student at least a month before the course begins. The Diploma Program Applicants to the Diploma Program require a
Bachelor of Education Degree or its equivalent and a teaching certificate.
Completion of 24 credits is required for the diploma program (eight 3-credit
courses). Nine credits have to be taken from the Department of Elementary
Education in the field of second language pedagogy. The other fifteen can be
chosen from courses in a particular language area or other education
courses. The Master of Education Program Applicants
to the Master of Education program require Bachelor of Education degree or
its equivalent, with a minimum average of 3 on a 4 point grading system, and
at least one year of successful teaching experience at the elementary
classroom level. Completion of 30 credits is required for the
course based MEd program (nine 3-credit courses and a capping
exercise). After Degree Program The
Faculty of Education offers a program to holders of approved degrees
including degrees granted from countries other than Undergraduate Program Second Language Minors Undergraduate
students in the Department of Elementary Education can choose a second
language as their minor. The department offers the following Second Language
Minors: Arabic, Cree, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Spanish
and Ukrainian. It may be possible to arrange a program for students
who intend to teach a language other than those listed here and which is
offered in the school system. >>Course
