Recruiting
I'm happy to field enquiries about graduate student and postdoc positions in my group. If you do email me, though, please attach a cv and a list of publications. Also, keep in mind that I am a condensed matter theorist. If you're interested in experiment, you may want to contact other faculty members working in this field..
Before applying, prospective students should be sure that they meet the admission requirements of the Department of Physics and those of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR). For international students, the FGSR maintains a list of the minimum academic requirements from other countries. It requires that students demonstrate English language proficiency.
Feodor Lynen Fellowships
As a former Alexander von Humboldt Fellow, I am eligible to host Feodor Lynen Fellows. The Feodor Lynen Fellowship is awarded to young German scientists who want to gain postdoctoral research experience abroad. If you think you might be a good fit for this award, I'd be happy to sponsor you and help you put together a strong application.
Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships
The new Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program will award 70 postdoctoral fellowships each year for tenure at a Canadian University. The Banting Fellowships will provide support for two years at $70,000/year, and NSERC hopes that the program will attract an elite group of researchers who have demonstrated both research excellence and leadership. The program requires that research institutions be closely involved in endorsing applicants. Our Department is very interested in recruiting the highest-quality applicants from both Canada and abroad.
Vanier Scholarships
The Canadian government has recently announced a very generous new scholarship to attract exceptional graduate students. The application process requires that the prospective student be nominated by the host University. If you are a strong student and interested in pursuing doctoral work here, please take a look at the program details and get in touch.
New Graduate Students
I may have an opening for one or two new students in my group. Whether you're already here and as yet unafilliated or considering applying to U of A, I'm very happy to talk about my research and about potential MSc and PhD projects.
There are no constraints on my committing to Canadian students who have their own financial support (e.g., Canada Graduate Scholarships).
Undergraduate Summer Students
I sometimes like to hire an undergraduate research assistant for the summer. The ideal candidate is a mathematically-inclined student who has (i) an interest in theoretical physics, (ii) at least one quantum mechanics course under her belt, and (iii) a strong background in (preferably C++) programming.
I strongly encourage students to submit an application to NSERC's Undergraduate Student Research Awards Program. The internal deadline for next summer is February 2011.
Undergraduate Special Projects
I am very willing to talk to students about supervising Phys 499 projects.
