About Us

The Canadian Library Association Student Chapter at the University of Alberta was founded in 2000. Our mission is to facilitate interactions between professionals and library students while encouraging participation in professional associations. In 2001, our committee voted unanimously to create a web presence for the Chapter to facilitate communication with the CLA membership and with other CLA student chapters.

Our membership is made up of students from the School of Library and Information Studies who meet periodically throughout the year to work on different committee projects. Incoming and continuing students are encouraged to join our Chapter and learn more about professional association work.

The current Chair of the CLA Student Chapter is Tara Ellen Forman. If you have questions or comments about the CLA Student Chapter, please contact Tara at tforman @ ualberta.ca.

About CLA

The Canadian Library Association (CLA) is the national English language association for the library community in Canada. It was founded in 1946 in Hamilton, Ontario and acts as a forum, a resource, and an advocate for libraries across the country. Their web site contains valuable information on issues facing Canadian libraries across the country.

The Annual Conference is the centre of the CLA's professional development program and 16 months are spent planning each Annual Conference. These conferences focus on professional development opportunities for library professionals but also provide exposure to new library projects at the Trade Show and Exhibition portion of the conference.

The CLA provides library students with a way of becoming involved in a national professional organization through its Student Chapters. The first Student Chapter of the CLA was established at the University of Western Ontario in 1999. The University of Alberta's Student Chapter was founded in 2000. Other Chapters have been established at the University of British Columbia, Dalhousie University, McGill University and the University of Toronto. To facilitate student involvement in the CLA, student prices are offered for membership fees; however, membership in the CLA is not a requirement for becoming involved in the local Student Chapter. For more information about the other Student Chapters, please visit the CLA's Student Chapters web page.
