SLIS Student Committees
A large part of librarianship is being active in professional associations and working on committees. Students are encouraged to get actively involved in life at the School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) through student-driven committees. The benefits are that students improve life at the school while also gaining valuable experience for their future careers.
Here is a listing of the other committees at SLIS:
- Students' Association
The Library and Information Studies Students' Association (LISSA) is the student government at the SLIS and includes both second and first year elected representatives. LISSA acts as a liaison between students and faculty, and facilitates student participation in a variety of academic, professional, and extracurricular activities. Please visit their web site at LISSA.
- Curriculum Committee
Students on this committee work with faculty in matters relating to the curriculum at SLIS and act as advocates in presenting curriculum feedback from their fellow students. More information is available at Curriculum Committee.
- Year End Party Committee
The Year End Party Committee at SLIS is responsible for organizing a spring dinner and dance to provide students, staff, and faculty an opportunity to celebrate the end of the school year. Please see their contact information at Grad Committee.
- Career Resource Committee
The Career Resource Committee provides information and organizes sessions for students on topics related to employment after graduation. They also maintain the Job Hunting Guide for Librarians and Related Information Professionals web site which is a resource for the entire library community.
- Partners' Week Committee
The Partners' Week Committee is responsible for holding two weeks of partnering experiences for students. Librarians from across the Edmonton and area library community volunteer to allow students to job shadow them for a morning or an afternoon during the week. A reception for all participating librarians and library students is held in the second term. For more information, please visit them at Partner's Week.
- Forum for Information Professionals Committee
This committee plans and organizes the annual Forum for Information Professionals, a conference that is for both students and the professional community in Edmonton. FIP is an opportunity for students and professionals to mix and attend informative sessions on a variety of topics.
