2004
Student Writing Competition - Rules and Regulations

  1. Only one entry is allowed per person.
  2. Entries should be no longer than 1000 words (exclusive of any footnotes or bibliography).
  3. Two print copies of each submitted work must be provided by the entrant.
  4. Entries should focus on one of the following topics: the future of libraries, current issues in libraries, or library history.
  5. All entries must be accompanied by a completed Permission to Publish form (pdf document). Any entry without a completed form will not be accepted.
  6. Winning entries will be published on the CLA Student Chapter website, a link for which can be found on the Student Committees page of the LISSA website (http://www.ualberta.ca/~lissa1/committees.htm), for 12 months. Each student’s name, the title of their work, and the year of the submission may be displayed on the website indefinitely for those submissions that win prizes.
  7. Bibliographic data regarding the winning entries will be published on the CLA Student Chapter website indefinitely.
  8. All entries must be submitted by February 27 at 9:00 a.m. to Christine Bourchier’s mailbox.
  9. Entries may take the form of an essay, an opinion piece, a photograph with a written paper, or a poem.
  10. The entrant's name should appear only on the Permission to Publish form. The entrant's name should not appear anywhere on the submitted work.
  11. To allow for blind judging of the submissions, the entrants' names will be entered in a spreadsheet and will have a corresponding coded number assigned to them by Christine Bourchier. This coded number will be used for identification of the submission during the contest.
  12. Judges will assess the papers for style, originality, and clarity. There is a special 'funniest' paper category and submissions will be assessed separately for humour.
  13. All judges will assess the papers independently and scores will be tabulated by Christine Bourchier.
  14. In the event of a tie, the papers in question will be reassessed by the judges.
  15. Participation prizes will be awarded through a random draw on 11 March 2004.
  16. Writing prizes will be announced on 18 March 2004.
  17. This contest is only open to students currently registered in the Master of Library and Information Studies program at the University of Alberta. CLA Student Chapter members and judges of the contest are not eligible to compete.

SPECIAL THANKS to Dr. Lisa Given, who provided guidance and feedback during the organization of this project.
