Past CLA Student Chapter Projects and Events
Here's what we did in 2008/2009:
- Holiday Book Drive
- CLA Presidential Visit CLA President Alvin Schraeder visited SLIS in October. Look for his article and photo with students from CLA chapter in this month's Feliciter, the official publication of the CLA.
- Banned Book Week A collaborative event with Future Librarians for Intellectual Freedom is being planned for Banned Book Week.
The CLA Student Chapter at the University of Alberta would like to thank everyone from the School of Library and Information Studies who participated in the annual book drive for Santas Anonymous. We collected 65 books and raised $217 to buy an additional 24 books, totaling 89 books.
We'd also like to thank Greenwoods Bookshoppe who gave us a discount on the books we bought and donated an additional 36 books as well as many galley copies. Thanks to everyone!

Here's what we did in 2004/2005:
- The President and the Director of CLA Spoke with SLIS Students
Both Stephen Abram, the President, and Don Butcher, the Director of the Canadian Library Association visited SLIS to speak with students about the future of the profession and shaping our careers.
- Santa's Anonymous Bookdrive
Once again, the SLIS community pulled together for a greater good and filled the Santa's Anonymous box with donations!
- Bookraiser
The Chapter planned and organized a storytelling event to raise books for a local community centre. Why Should Kids Have all the Fun?: an Evening of Storytelling in Support of the Bissell Centre featured Renee Englot, Merle Harris, and Gail de Vos and was held at the Whitemud Crossing branch of the Edmonton Public Library. Many thanks to the event's co-sponsors: the Greater Edmonton Library Association and Edmonton Public Library.
- Writing Contest
The Chapter held a writing contest. Read the rules or view a list of winners.
Here's what we did in 2002/2003.
- The President and the Director of CLA Spoke with SLIS Students
- CLA Student Chapter Web Site Development
- Canadian Library Association Student Chapter Writing Competition for SLIS Students
- Santa's Anonymous Drive
Both Wendy Newman, the President, and Don Butcher, the Director of the Canadian Library Association visited SLIS to speak with students about the future of the profession and shaping our careers.
In 2001/2002, the Chapter identified the need to develop a web presence as a means of facilitating communication between different student chapters, increasing contact with the CLA, and increasing our visibility to SLIS students. In 2002/2003, the web site was created and approved by the committee.
The first CLA Student Chapter Student Writing competition was organized as a means of promoting the CLA at SLIS. Committee members developed submission rules, developed judging guidelines, worked to solicit donations for the competition, and organized judging.
The Competition was considered a resounding success. The library community gave enthusiastic support and donated many prizes. Effective marketing encouraged many entries from SLIS students and the judges were challenged to select from very high quality papers. Winners had their work published the CLA Student Chapter web site and in the Letter of the LAA.
Being an active part of the library community also means being active in the larger community. With this in mind, the CLA Student Chapter held it's third annual Santa's Anonymous drive at SLIS. With the biggest response yet, SLIS students, faculty, and staff donated 75 toys to this worthy charity that distributes the gifts to underprivileged Edmonton children.
