Our first Bose-Einstein condensates, now in video format!  In mid-2016, we saw the first hints of Bose-condensation in our gases of 87Rb atoms, and after lots of hard work and optimization, we reliably produce these gases down to about 40 nK. See some local publicity here and here.  Left: The density profile of the gas as it cools from about 300 nK to 40 nK.  Right: releasing the cloud from an anistropic trap (elongated vertically), the cloud’s expansion in time of flight shows an inversion of this aspect ratio, indicating that these atoms are in their ground state.

Using the tools of atomic physics, we study the fundamentals of quantum many-body physics. As part of the Departement of Physics' Condensed Matter group, we will apply these techniqes to study how systems of individual quantum particles engage in collective or coopertative behavior, focussing especially on the influence of interactions, external fields, and non-equilibrium behaviour.

We’re looking for talented people to join the group, to help build and operate an apparatus to discover the quirks of the quantum universe.  Take a look at the Positions page, and contact Lindsay if you’d like some more information.
