2015-16 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

Highlights from the 2015-16 season include the following events:

  • On Friday, October 30, 2015 Madrigal Singers presented Arcadia, their first concert of the season in Convocation Hall, featuring music by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt to commemorate his 80th birthday, and the premiere of Arcadia, a commissioned work by Edmonton composer Margaret King. Other composers featured included Eric Barnum, Peter Bloesch, Stephen Chatman, Bob Chilcott, Eriks Ešenvalds and Vytautus Miškinis.
  • On Sunday, December 5, 2015 Madrigal Singers joined the Alberta Baroque Ensemble, led by Artistic Director Paul Schieman, for their annual Christmas concert at Robertson-Wesley United Church, singing Vivaldi’s “other” Gloria, RV 588, and two Christmas cantatas by Dietrich Buxtehude.
  • The Madrigal Singers embarked on their first ever post-Christmas tour, travelling to Athens, Greece to participate in a choral festival conducted by well-known British conductor Simon Carrington (a founding member of The King’s Singers). In addition to performing with choirs from Connecticut and Michigan, the Madrigal Singers gave three individual performances. Other activities included visiting many of the historic sites in Athens as well as a three-island boat cruise.
  • On Sunday, January 24, 2016 the Madrigal Singers joined the University of Alberta Concert Choir and Symphony Orchestra at the Winspear to celebrate the Department of Music’s 50th anniversary with a performance of Beethoven’s An die Freude (Ode to Joy), the final movement of his Ninth Symphony.
  • On Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 6 PM at the University of Alberta Faculty Club (11425 Saskatchewan Drive), the Madrigal Singers will present their 29th annual Dinner Concert and Auction, Fancies. In addition to individual members and groups regaling guests with various cabaret items and madrigals, the choir will present a concert devoted to settings of Shakespeare.   • On Friday, April 1, 2016 the Madrigal Singers present their final Spring Concert at 8 PM at Convocation Hall. In addition to celebrating the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death with settings of passages from his plays and sonnets by a wide range of composers, including Ager, Barnum, Bloesch, Johanson, Vaughan Williams and Weelkes, we will present the Bach motet Komm, Jesu, Komm and Brahms’s motet Ich aber bin elend.

HIGHLIGHTS OF PAST SEASONS

2014
  Madrigal Singers joined the Richard Eaton Singers under interim conductor Sara Brooks for an orchestral concert including Vivaldi Gloria and Schubert Mass in G.
  Madrigal Singers returned to perform with the Alberta Baroque Ensemble at its annual Christmas concert.
2013
  Madrigal Singers joined the U of A Concert Choir and Symphony Orchestra for a concert celebrating the Centenary of the birth of Benjamin Britten. This concert also featured the premiere of two settings commissioned for the Madrigal Singers by Canadian composer Jeff Enns.
  Madrigal Singers returned to perform Handel’s Messiah with the Edmonton Symphony.
2012
  Madrigal Singers travelled to Toronto to participate in University Voices, a project featuring 4 university choirs from Ontario, Manitoba and Alberta, under the Latvian guest conductor Kaspars Putninš.
2010
  Madrigal Singers performed at Podium 2010, the conference of the Association of Canadian Choral conductors in Saskatoon, SK
2009
  Madrigal Singers sang Handel’s Messiah as guests of the Edmonton Symphony
  Performance of Haydn's Die Schöpfung (The Creation)
  Release of Choir’s 5th CD Hesperides, with harpists

2008
  Performances with Alberta Baroque Ensemble at its annual Christmas concerts
  Tour of Ireland, including participation in Cork International Choral Competition (5th place finish)
2007
  Performances of Handel’s Messiah with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra

  National Choral Award in Recording category from Association of Canadian Choral Conductors for its CD The Passing of the Year (released in 2004)
2005
  Invitation to perform at the National Convention of the American Choral Directors Association, Los Angeles
