With the vast deposits of oil sands in Alberta, we have an energy resource that can fully supply Canada with its energy needs for the next two centuries. However, this energy resource should be exploited responsibly by maximizing oil recovery and meeting environmental needs.

Fundamental understanding of industrial processes leads to their improvement in terms of economics and environmental impact. In most cases, one needs to span many scientific and technological disciplines to appropriately appreciate the complexity of a chemical or a physical process. In our research on oil sands processability we focus on diverse research areas that includes:

Single phase flows
Fluid particle dynamics
Emulsion stability
Interfacial phenomena
Liquid crystals
Electrokinetics
Particles deposition on surfaces
Flocculation and sedimentation
Asphaltene precipitation
Bitumen-air attachment
Flotation columns
Sub-processes in bitumen recovery

Research in any of the above-cited areas prepares research personnel for other related disciplines such as petrochemical, mineral dressing, biological and food industries. Our laboratories are equipped with the latest analytical, computational and research equipment and instruments.
