From September 1, 1939 to August 14, 1945, the world was mired in the second major international conflict of the 20th century.  Nearly 60 million people perished in the conflict worldwide; approximately 20 million were combatants (Army, Navy, Air Force from both the Allies and Axis powers).  Nearly 40 million civilians were killed in the war, many in concentration camps, others by starvation, and many through bombings of the cities in which they lived.
