The Politics of the Data: How the Australian Statistical Indigene is Constructed

The production, analysis and presentation of Indigenous data are not neutral interpretations of numerical counts. Institutionally positioned within a portrayal of Australian national social trends, the data's ubiquity belies their discursive power. By virtue of the racialised terrain in which they are conceived, collected, analysed and interpreted the data are politicised in ways mostly invisible to their producers and users. This racialised 'politics of the data' is the focus of this presentation.

NS 280 - Rewriting Indigenous Issues
Marilyn Dumont - This is an arts-based approach to Indigenous issues where students will produce creative writing based on personal experience of colonization and issues including: identity / representation, language and culture loss, settler / indigenous relations, land, and environment.
We will investigate the writing of several Indigenous writers as models and impetus for crafting poetry, creative non-fiction, fiction, and memoir.

NS 330 - Native Economic Development
This summer term course (NS 330) will review underlying factors, which affect the economies of Native communities and examine different approaches to Native economic development, including community, corporate and entrepreneurial business approaches.
The Native perspective to Native economic development will be a principal theme. The objective of the course will be to assess approaches to the identification, planning, and implementation of economic development strategies for Native communities.

Native Studies courses will help you to understand the complexity of Canada, and to succeed in your future career as you work with Aboriginal clients, patients, students, customers, suppliers and partners.
Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students are invited to register for courses offered in 2011-12.
