The only information used from this
grid is the "Highest Question No. Used."
The value to be entered here indicates the length
of each data record which may range from 1 to
180.

|
The Main Parameters are used to communicate the
following information to the OMRDATA scanner program (please
write the number in the box provided and fill in the corresponding
bubble to request each of the desired actions). Note that
the OMRDATA sheet is arranged as 4 sets of grids with
each set allowing the coding of up to 45 characters. The
sheet may be treated as a single entity yielding one data
record, or it may be divided into a top half and bottom
half yielding two data records per sheet, or each of the
4 sets of grids may be treated separately yielding four
data records per sheet.
A. Number of data records per sheet:
- 1 = 1 record/sheet allowing up to 180 characters
per record
- 2 = 2 records/sheet allowing up to 90 characters
per record
- 4 = 4 records/sheet allowing up to 45 characters
per record
B. Identification number:
- 0 - 9 = number of columns to check for presence
of blanks at the beginning of each record
C - F are not used.
The Secondary Parameters
are used to communicate the following information to the
OMRDATA scanner program (please write the number in the
box provided and fill in the corresponding bubble to request
each of the desired actions):
K. Check for multiple responses to an item:
- 0 = pocket (or flag) sheets that have multiple
responses to an item
- 1 = change multiple responses to blanks
- 2 = use * to indicate a multiple response
L. Check for omits on sheets having a high percentage
of light marks:
- 0 = don't check
- 1 = pocket (or flag) sheets having omits along
with too many light marks
M. Tolerance value for percentage of light marks:
0 - 9 = first digit of percentage of maximum
percentage of light marks (the value 3 is recommended).
NOP. Minimum number of marks that should appear
in each record:
- This 3-digit value gives a lower limit for the number
of marks that should appear on an answer sheet. Sheets
having less than this number are rejected for visual
inspection (if the 'Pocket Sheets' option has been selected).
This option is used to guard against the possibility
that too many marks are treated as erasures as a result
of the option selected for 'M'.
-

One of these two options must be chosen. If you request
"Pocket Questionable Sheets for MANUAL Verification",
sheets that are rejected because they appear to be improperly
completed (for reasons such as those requested in the
Secondary Parameters above) will be diverted to a special
hopper where the operator can review the sheet to see
if it can be repaired. After any possible repairs are
made, the rejected sheet is scanned again and forced to
be accepted even if repairs cannot be successfully performed.
If you request "FLAG Questionable Fields and Process
as if Normal", sheets that appear to be improperly completed
will not be selected for operator attention. Instead,
a '?' will be placed at the beginning of the field that
contains questionable results. Choosing this option means
that the sheets will be processed without operator assistance,
e.g., a sheet which has been completed using pen instead
of pencil will be accepted as though it was completely
blank.

None of these menu items normally applies to data
obtained from OMRDATA sheets. We automatically run
a program that takes the output from the scanner
and creates a simplified data file. An output file
with the suffix ".dat" is created which contains
the desired data records. In particular, if a data
sheet contains more than one record, the ".dat"
file contains the individual records.

As the heading
implies, this option does not apply to the OMRDATA scanner
program.
