Sex Education - March 12th 2012

Ooh we're having a sexy meeting this week! Actually it's just sex education, and there is nothing sexy about it. I suggest going and please don't forget to support the RHA's Day of Silence by finding one of Siderite's tables and wearing a bandana or a pin! We are located in SUB, HUB, NREF, Lister and FAC all week from 12-4pm!

Religion and Sexuality Conference - March 5th 2012

OUTreach with the help of the Chaplain's Association will once again be hosting the religion and sexuality conference this Tuesday. It was such a great success last year as we had a wide array of speakers from various religions present on their religion's views and the many misconceptions. This meeting is hosted in SAB 321(aka Civil Engineering Building as we once knew it) and goes from 5pm-7pm.

LGBTQ Politics - February 26th 2012

I hope everybody had a lovely reading week! This Tuesday February 28th, Nick and Mark will be introducing us to the topic of religion. I say introducing because the following week we have our religion conference, where more than just our regular attendees go! It'll be an awesome discussion, so I'll see you there!

EPS is Looking For Volunteers! - February 2nd 2012

Hi guys, the Edmonton Police Service is looking for volunteers to sit on a committee that discusses case files, restorative justice measures for hate crimes against LGBTQ individuals and LGBTQ EPS policies. They are currently looking for young individuals with fresh ideas to join a committee that has a real effect in determining new policies (two of the people on the committee meet regularly with the Chief of Police). They prefer applicants who are a sexual minority or gender variant; however, if you are an ally and have a concern for LGBTQ rights, you are welcome to apply as well. The commitment would be 2 hours a month (there is 1 meeting per month). For sociology of criminology majors, this would be a great addition to your CV; for everyone else, this would be a great opportunity to create change in the EPS. If you are interested in applying, please message me!

Ski Trip Subsidy - January 28th 2012

Hi all, I apologize for not having posted this earlier, but for those who might not have been to the meeting this past Tuesday, we had opened up submissions for a subsidized (read: free) spot on the OUTreach ski trip. This subsidy is meant for those who are financially unable to accommodate the costs of the trip. All you have to do is submit a 500 word mini-essay about what you would gain from the experience and a 250 word mini-mini essay about your financial situation and why you might not otherwise be able to attend without the subsidized spot. Submissions will be judged by a person who is not on the OUTreach executive and must be printed out and handed into the OUTreach office or to Beni by 6:00pm on Tuesday, January 31.

Family Discussion Panel - January 27th 2012

We're doing something really exciting this Tuesday. We've gathered some lovelies families to discuss what it's like being a gay parent. It'll be posed as a question panel so we can hear different perspectives all together.

Sexuality! What? - January 22th 2012

This Tuesday January 24th we will be talking about sexuality, but seriously you will be leading the discussion as we ask questions that make you wonder wonderous things. Also a very important sidenote! Applications for funding for the Jasper Ski Trip are being reopened for another week, starting this Tuesday. This means you have the possibility of going on this trip for free. Requirments are that you write a one page letter describing why you deserve to have this trip paid for (i.e. financial need).

Welcome Back! - January 8th 2012

We definitely have a few points to mention as the new semester begins with OUTreach:
1. For our first meeting this Tuesday, January 10th, we are starting off with ice breakers to welcome in new and old members. Hopefully everybody can leave at least knowing one more person!
2. School Presentations Project: The school presentations project is a joint effort that OUTreach is taking part in with ISMSS and the Edmonton Public School Board. Recently, a policy has been created by the school board in which gender and sexual orientation variants are protected. As such, an initiative has been taken to raise awareness of LGBTQ realities, to humanize and de-stigmatize LGBTQ identifying persons, and to empower LGBTQ persons by giving them resources and recognition. The pilot was done in the last term; this term, the project is actually starting to get going. We also have a few volunteer positions, such as being a presentation facilitator or panel member. Training is required for these positions and that is on Saturday, February 4th, 2012 from 10am-3pm at the main U of A campus. If you are interested in volunteering and would like more information, please contact Ryan Au (e-mail address is on the left) and RSVP by January 16th. You can also visit our facebook page for more information.
3. Welcome back!

For everyone who is attending the next meeting, the topic is coming out stories. New OUTreach Website! - September 7, 2011

So if you've been to the OUTreach website recently (before today), you might have noticed it was a bit plain. Well, we spent all summer making a new website that is as functional as it is pretty! The facelift offers all the same information as the previous one, as well as a blog-style design for those who don't have twitter, but would like to know about the happenings of OUTreach. There is also a sort of get-to-know the exec on the About Us page. The webpage is best viewed in Google Chrome, but will function in both Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer (less prettily).

If you notice any bugs or problems with the site, please email outreach@ualberta.ca so we can fix the problem!

Feel free to come a bit early if you want to chat with some of the exec before a meeting; I will be stuck in class until 5 but most exec come a bit earlier to hang out and talk to people!
