Eurekamp! is a series of week-long summer camps that run throughout July. These non-profit camps target children ages 5-14 and are sponsored by Philosophy for Children Alberta. Developed in a collaboration between students and professional educators, each camp is geared towards getting children excited about learning by prompting questions through play. |
|
| Inspirational themes are taken from disciplines such as math, science, language, drama, art, music, and ecology and are explored outdoors and indoors through experiments, games, adventures, presentations, and camper-led discussions. In each camp, children and youth build confidence, a love of learning through inquiry and play, and gain exposure to a world of ideas. | |
|
Our Mission: To assist children and youth in developing mathematical, artistic, scientific, and humanitarian thinking through play and to provide them with opportunities to consider important questions and ideas from our evolving world on their own terms. |
Eurekamp! - 2012 Programs
We offer programs for four broad age groups. Just click the age-range you are interested in to see programs designed for your children. The suggested grade ranges refer to the grade that your camper will be starting in September 2012.
If you have any questions please contact our Camp Director (John Simpson) who can be reached at (780) 492-3307 (option 4) or via john.simpson@ualberta.ca.
Food is especially interesting to young children, extra-especially when they get to take part in the production and preparation of what they get to eat! This camp gives children the opportunity to begin to build a healthy relationship with their food; from growing it, to preparing it, to eating it, to thinking about it, your camper will be actively engaged all day, everyday. We won't promise that they won't ever play with their food again but they might just start helping a little more in the kitchen. Maximum of 24 campers.
Offered July 9-13 and July 16-20. Early registration $199.
Music, drama, painting, sculpture, poetry, and the list goes on. There is something magical about the opportunity to play with the fine arts and express yourself with them. This camp captures that magic. Your camper will spend their week playing with a variety of fine arts related projects that will spark their curiosity and creativity. You can expect them to come home each day excited about the things they are creating and the facilities at the university that have assisted their creativity. Oh, and they'll learn a little bit of magic too! Maximum of 24 campers.
Offered July 23-27 (Now FULL) and July 30-August 3. Early registration $199.
This camp has been designed especially for campers with an interest in building things and getting messy while exploring the world around them. With nature and the environment as the background campers will be challenged to think about about everyday things in new ways. From the magic of powerful magnets and ferrofluids to water rockets and cars your camper will be captivated by projects that move and work. Maximum of 24 campers.
Offered July 16-20 and July 30-August 3. Early registration $199.
Level 1 immerses pre teens in the world of strategy and creative thinking. Your camper can expect to spend every day immersed in a world of games and puzzles from around the world. More than simple diversions, each game and activity will push your camper to develop their mathematical intuition and physical talents. No previous knowledge is required, only a deep curiosity and an excess of physical and mental energy to burn. Maximum of 24 campers.
Offered July 9-13 and July 23-27. Early registration $199.
From Science to Drama this is an opportunity to explore the wide range of exciting ideas and places inside the university. If your camper is interested in more things than you can keep track of then this expansive tour of faculties and departments from across the university is just the place for them. This years campers can expect to see behind the scenes at campus radio station CJSR, to build and use their own classic film camera throughout the week, and to discover that comics really are all high literature, all while continually having the opportunity to explore socially, politically, and personally challenging ideas. Maximum of 24 campers.
Offered July 9-13 and July 23-27. Early registration $199.
Beacuse of the richness of challenge and intricacy that games and puzzles provide which cannot be explored with younger children in Masterminds Level 1 we upgraded the program and now offer Level 2 to our senior campers. It provides new puzzles and challenges alongside favourites from Level 1, turning up the heat, asking campers to run a little harder and think with a more sophistication. Your camper can expect whole-body active twists on classic games like Chess as well as a new assortment of puzzles and challenges that they will have never seen before. As with Level 1, you can expect your camper to come home with lots to share and you might just see them asking for a return of family board game night (except with better games). No previous knowledge or experience is required. Maximum of 24 campers.
Offered July 16-20 and July 30-August 3. Early registration $199.
Just because you're too old to be a camper doesn't mean you're too old to go to camp! At the request of some of some of our senior campers moving into grades 10, 11, and 12, and who just gotten "too old" to just be campers we are developing a program to bring you back and have you work and play at camp again. You will be in a mentoring relationship with the senior volunteers and counsellors who have traditionally formed the core of our program development and progarm delivery teams. Not only will you have the opportunity to help provide some of the EUREKAMP programs but you'll have an important hand in designing and preparing those programs as well. We are still working out the details of this exciting opportunity and will share them with you as soon as they are available (likely the beginning of March). In the meantime please feel free to register your interest with our camp director.

Eurekamp! - Extras
If you have a copy of our brochure 2011 then you might be looking for answers to the fun questions we asked. Or you might just be looking for some fun stuff in general. In either case, this is the place. (Note that the 2012 brochure is coming soon)
Paper Claws
The Hole Puzzle
In the brochure we asked if you could make a single cut in a piece of paper so that you end up with a hole that you can walk right through without any sort of additional trickery. Well, we're not going to give you the answer for that one. However, here are some hints...
- Simply cutting a piece of paper in half and walking between the pieces doesn't count.
- The cut can be a long one.
- You are welcome to fold the paper.
- Having trouble with the single cut? Try as many cuts as you need and work your way down.
