  Students entering the IST program are expected to have basic computer competence (Level 1) on both Macintosh and DOS/Windows computer systems, in the following areas: operating systems, word processing, graphics, a general theoretical understanding of how computers work, and electronic mail. They are expected to pass the Level 1 Competency Assessment during their first semester. This assessment is normally done by University Computing Services or Integrated Technologies for the department. A Level 1 Certificate is awarded upon passing. Prior to graduation students are expected to master Level 2 competency.

  At the conclusion of the core courses [students] should be able to:

  A. Demonstrate understanding of the instructional systems development process:

  1. by discussing the rationale for using a systematic approach.

  The Pennsylvania Department of Education requires three years of successful classroom teaching experience on an educational Specialist I certificate before level II certificate, such as Instructional Technology Specialist, can be issued.
